Lead flake white

The process

The production of traditional lead white pigment is a lengthy one, where stacks of pure metallic lead are converted into flakes of lead carbonate over a prolonged period of oxidation. The flakes are then extensively cleaned, throughly ground using a creamic ball tumbler and left to dry naturally before being collected and placed into the apothecary jars.

The raw pigment is then ready for mixing with linseed oil to produce lead white paint; with better handling qualities than industrially produced lead white, brush marks can be retained more easily within the topography of this paint, its special absorption rate means less medium is required when mulling and it has very good tone and tinting qualities.
